Non-Profit Law
Our attorneys have extensive experience in representing a variety of non-profits on a range of legal and policy issues. In fact, one of our attorneys served for years as General Counsel to a small foundation, and presently serves as General Counsel to a mid size non-profit corporation and a large religious society and daily addresses a range of issues, from the routine to the unique and cutting edge. Our non-profit practice encompasses counseling clients regarding legal and ethical obligations of Board members and officers; governance issues; constraints on lobbying; human resources and employment issues; and whether certain activities would generate unrelated, business taxable income; as well as a range of general corporate and contractual issues. We have drafted ethical guidelines and conflict of interest policies and surveys and have counseled clients on providing comments and testimony before the District of Columbia City Council. We have counseled church clients on church polity and the application of civil law to ecclesiastical issues. In short, we provide the broad range of services that would be required of outside general counsel for any entity.

McLeod, Watkinson & Miller also represents and counsels non-profit membership associations, advocacy organizations, investigative journalist organizations, non-profit theater, religious organizations, and other non-profits of many different types.

Our non-profit practice also includes counseling and advising clients on a range of intellectual property issues, including registering and reviewing trademarks, negotiating licensing and royalty agreements, and pursuing claims for trademark infringement.
